About
G. Giridhar Prabhu was born in 1957 to Shri Gurpur Sadananda Prabhu and Smt. Rohini Sadananda Prabhu in the coastal town of Mangalore. He completed his schooling at St Aloysius Primary School and St Aloysius High School – SSLC Class of ’72. And then did his intermediate at St Aloysius PU College, 1972 -’74. He went on to pursue his graduate studies in Commerce from St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, 1974 – ’77.
His father G. Sadananda Prabhu was a pioneer in the cashew industry, having founded Consolidated Cashews in 1972. G. Giridhar Prabhu joined his father in the family business in 1977 and helped to expand it further. Achal Industries was established as a family business in 1981 with operations in their own facility at Baikampady. In 1983, Achal Cashews Private Limited was incorporated.
Phalguni Cashew Centre — an exclusive retail factory outlet — was established in 1983 and later expanded to 3 outlets. Seeing the demand for dried fruits and nuts, G. Giridhar Prabhu established four companies – Achal Industries Private Limited, Achal Cashews Private Limited, Achal Farm Products Private Limited and Achal Primenuts Private Limited. Currently, he serves as the Chairman-Executive of Achal Industries Pvt. Ltd., as well as three other companies.
Contributions to the Cashew Industry
G. Giridhar Prabhu has transformed Achal Industries into one of the most modern manufacturing cashew facilities in the country. Under his leadership, it has become one of the first units recognized for In-process Quality Control by the Export Inspection Agency of India and the World’s First ISO 22000:2005 certified Firm by BVQI.
G. Giridhar Prabhu is specialized in all aspects of the Cashew Nut industry and has submitted various proposals and papers to the Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Agriculture. He has provided significant inputs to the Government of India through The Cashew Export Promotion Council to expand the area and production of raw cashews which is a vital input to the Cashew Industry. He is also deeply interested in technical matters related to packaging and control of pesticides as well as promotion.
Contributions in the Financial Sector
G. Giridhar Prabhu has studied interest rate distortions, anomalies and aberrations in the Indian Financial Sector and has provided analysis and policy options in the form of 23 papers to the RBI and Government.
He authored a book titled “Interest Rates in India: Towards Harmony” in 2015. This book contains commentary on the Monetary and Credit Policy of the Reserve Bank of India and Government of India with articulation for having harmony in Interest Rates in India from a citizen’s perspective.
He has also submitted several Banking Sector policy proposals for economic revival, Fiscal Deficit reduction, Public Sector reform, strengthening the Financial Sector and Agenda for Governance.
As President of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI), Mr Prabhu has piloted the promotion of the Mangalore Special Economic Zone. The Kanara Chamber of Commerce was accorded In-principle Approval on the recommendation of the Government of Karnataka.
